In conjunction with the festival Tesla mit Sonambiente dutch artist Sasker Scheerder and DISK /CTM in a collaborative effort transform the former gas station FIT – Freie Internationale Tankstelle into a pimped up overdimensioned car radio and hi-fi stereo system. The live concert of Techno-Punk duo Aux Raus! will be transmitted directly to cars gathered in the near surroundings as a split-up multi-channel Ultra-Short-Wave radio signal on four frequencies by the use of micro-FM-transmitters.
All car-owners are invited to participate in the performance and to amplify the concert with their own car sound systems. Drive-in begins at 7 pm – bring your car into the right position. From 7.30 pm on you can tune your radio to one of the frequencies, that broadcast the distinct channels. Pick up and boost out one of Aux Raux!’ instruments:
Ultra Short Wave-frequencies (MHz) are:
95.2 = voice
98.5 = bass drum
100.2 = synths
103.0 = guitar
One car only recieves a part of the overall sound-spectrum at a time. Teamwork is crucial to recreate the complete composition. The actuall concert starts 8 pm sharp and will be aired citywide by Radio Einzueins on 95.2 MHz.
Berlin Audio Drive is an installative performance by dutch soundartist Sasker Scheerder that invites cars equiped with powerfull on-board sound systems – so called Boomcars – to gather at a given location and gives them the leading role. The basic principle is to transmit a soundwork or music composition in the form of a multi-channel radio signal to the cars present in the nearby area by the use of micro-FM-transmitters. The Boomcars – respectevily their on-board radio systems – gathered at a special location (garage, parking lot, street or other) are tuned to the given frequencies. Due to the distinct features and adjustments of each car and car radio, the varied volume and spatial positioning, the overall sound composition is recreated and completed by the individual behaviour of the car owners.
Boomcar enthusiasts are proud of their audio equipment! They show their lastest acquisitions and creations on conventions and fairs and engage in a competition for the best and most powerfull sound. Nevertheless to customize your car this way is first of all a very personal fetish and therefore the sound played on those stereo systems usually represents the individual taste of their owners. At Berlin Audio Drive the gathering of individual Boomcars transforms into a spontaneous orchestra to team up people, who are used to compete with each other.
The music for the Berlin Boomcar performance has been written by the dutch electro band Aux Raus! in collaboration with Sasker Scheerder. Aux Raus! are part of the mexican Nuevos Ricos label. The latest Boomcar performance in collaboration with Nuevos Ricos took place in March 2006 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany at the garage of the Marriott Hotel on the occasion of the Frankfurt Art Fair.
Berlin Audio Drive is a project by DISK / CTM in cooperation with Radio Einszueins, Tesla, Freie Internationale Tankstelle and has been made possible with the friendly support of the Mondriaan Foundation in Amsterdam.
