DISK Session 06: O.BLAAT & ANNE WELLMER
Date: February 21, 2006 Time: 9 pm   DISK Session 06 brings together two musicians that share a strong interest in exploring sound through a variety of approaches and formats: Both, Japanese sound artist O.blaat based in NYC, and dutch sound artist/composer Anne Wellmer, recently relocated to Berlin, deliver stringent, abstract improvised minimalism attentive to the smallest of sounds. O.blaat's and Wellmer interests meet in their joint sense for experimentation, their affinity towards technology and software, their favour for improvisation and the fact that they both engage in many collaboration projects with changing musicians and artists. Besides music performances, both artists also work on sound installations and networked performances.   O.BLAAT The "Art of Disappearance" continues. Based in Brooklyn, New York, sound artist, composer, and core member of SHARE , o.blaat (Keiko Uenishi) is known for her sound works formed through experiments in restructuring and analyzing one's relationship with sounds, through kinesthetic response as well as aural cognition. She has collaborated with numerous artists including: Ikue Mori, DJ Olive, Lloop, Miguel Frasconi, Timeblind, Eyvind Kang, Sachiko M, Tetsuji Akiyama, Aki Onda, Toshio Kajiwara, Christine Bard, Kaffe Matthews, Ralph Steinbrüchel, Anthony Coleman, Kurt Ralske, Lukasz Lysakowski, HC Gilje, Eric Redlinger, Klaus Filip, Karlheinz Essl, Bernhard Loibner, Takemura Nobukazu, Ryuichi Sakamoto, among others. Her Across: Fillip 2, a site-specific audio-light interactive piece for a cargo container, was one of three sound art exhibitions simultaneously opened in East London, UK, in June 2005, as a part of six sites for sound project curated by dosensos.org, and o.blaat was an invitee to perform at Tate Britain for the six sites opening. She received a Van Lier Foundation/Harvestworks fellowship in 2001 and was artist-in-residence in 2004, creating a sound-movement composition tool Ché Shire in collaboration with Viennese composer/programmer, Klaus Filip. O.blaat has performed at CTM.04 both solo and as part of the Share Open Jam project.   o.blaat's first CD Two Novels: Gaze/In the Cochlea was released from Portuguese label, Cronica in 2004. > http://obla.at     ANNE WELLMER Anne Wellmer is a composer, performer, singer and sound artist. She studied electronic music at the Institute of Sonology in The Hague and composition with Alvin Lucier and Anthony Braxton at Wesleyan University. Among her work are live music for dance and theater, sound installations, radio art, network projects and improvisation with electronics. Anne Wellmer lives and works in The Hague (NL) and in Berlin (D). She has collaborated with Marko Ciciliani, Justin Bennet, Yannis Kyriakides, Edwin van der Heide, Kaffee Mathews, BMB Con. and many others.
