The final CTM Concert instalment for 2012, this special evening gathers two highly respected sound artists to present a night of immersive soundscapes.
Well known for the peerless, timeless Monolake releases on Chain Reaction and his own imprint Imbalance Computer Music, Robert Henke also produces music under his own name, and has done since the early 90s. As Monolake became more dancefloor oriented, under his own name Henke was releasing drone-based sound environments, explorations of sound and structure in the context of interactions between a sonic event and the space in which it happens. A pioneer of multichannel sound, Henke uses methods and systems such as wave field synthesis and ambisonics to create situations of total immersion, expanding the sonic experience of his performances beyond of what can be reproduced in stereo.
Performing a work entitled “Dust III – Concerto for Speakers and Granular Synthesis”, Robert Henke presents an alternative to the seemingly indispensable external visualization of sound and music during concerts: an intoxicating, immersive experience of dense sound in a dark room. The material is mainly produced from the microscopic fragmentation and recombination of real recordings, which Henke uses as building blocks in his live improvisation. Surrounded by a multi-channel sound system, the audience is captured within a 3-dimensional space of sonic waves ranging from barely audible to earthquake-inducing. Henke himself performs in the very middle of the installation.

A veteran of the Montreal experimental music community, Tim Hecker was first recognized under the Jetone moniker in the early 2000s. Following releases under his own name on labels such as Kranky, Mille Plateaux, Alien8, Room 40, Force Inc, and Staalplaat, as well as collaborations with much lauded contemporaries such as Christian Fennesz, Ben Frost, Aidan Baker, Stephen O'Malley, and, more recently Oneohtrix Point Never, Hecker’s international reputation has swelled to enviable proportions.
Hecker is known for his intense, atmospheric drone compositions that bridge the divide between artful dissonance and avant-garde classical. His works have been described as "structured ambient", "tectonic color plates" and "cathedral electronic music". More to the point, he has focused on exploring the intersection of noise, dissonance and melody, fostering an approach to songcraft which is both physical and emotive. Through a steady release schedule, including the criticially acclaimed albums “Harmony In Ultraviolet” (2006) and “An “Imaginary Country” (2009), and his newest album, 2011’s concept piece “Ravedeath 1979”, Hecker has amassed a wide cult following.
