DISK Session 05: ERICH BERGER & HC GILJE |
Date: December 15, 2005
Time: 9 pm
Audio visual experimentation by Erich Berger and HC Gilje. Oslo based artist Erich Berger gives an introduction into his receent works, followed up by the performance 'CAT', that is strictly based one line of Code only. HC Gilje presents his new DVD 'Cityscapes' and his most recent project 'Nodio'.
ERICH BERGER 'CAT'
'CAT' utilizes the following line as its sound and video source:
"erich@nalle:~$ cat /dev/dsp >> /dev/dsp"
feedback loops and mixersettings disclose a surprising richness of this seemingly trivial configuration. in a similar primitive manner the audiosignal itself serves as as input to a videomonitor, helplessly interpreting it as videosignal.
Erich Berger is an artist and independent researcher born in Austria, who works onnetworked installation pieces and audio visual performance. He currently lives and works in Oslo/Norway. Berger is a communication engineer and received a master degree in Philosophy from the university of Vienna/Austria. Berger currently directs the MAKING SENSE Project (Physical Computing for Artistic purpose) at Atelier Nord in Oslo and holds workshops about physical computing in Media Labs and Universities around
Europe. With the sound artist PURE he founded the audiovisual improvisation duo PURE.BERGER. His collaborators include Artists like, Laura Beloff, Martin Pichlmair,
PURE or ZEITBLOM.

HC GILJE 'CITYSCAPES'
The 'Cityscapes'-DVD, released on the french Lowave label, contains 4 videos with urban related themes, an interview about the works, and a short essay in the cover. The videos have been made over a period of 6 years, starting in Hong Kong in 1998. The audio track of the four works are made by Jazzkammer, Kelly Davis and HC Gilje.
'NODIO'
nodio is a networked multichannel audiovisual system, where each node in the system is a source both for video and audio. The nodes are linked either by a LAN or WLAN network. The aim of HC Gilje's nodio project is to create a tool to choreograph motion in space using image and sound. The system is intended both for installations and media performances. Each node can operate individually or as part of a bigger setup. One image can be split up to the different nodes, or each node can have a separate image. Images can freely move between the different nodes, to create a distinct experience of movement in a physical space. Image transformations and fades can be triggered individually or globally. The system provides different modes to link image and sound or to generate sound from images.
HC Gilje is a Norwegian artist working with video in installations, short films, video integrated in dance and theatre performances, and live video improvisation. Gilje is one of the members of the video improvisation trio 242.pilots (also including Kurt Ralske and Lukasz Lysakowski) and the audiovisual duo Blind (with audio collaborator Kelly Davis). Gilje is also the visual motor of Kreutzerkompani.
