Belfast, the hometown of Boxcutter, is more than 300 miles from dubstep’s epicentre in London, providing the perfect environment for excursions away from the conventions of the genre. Boxcutter makes use of his position as an external observer in a playful way: On his debut album
Oneiric, he experimented with a blend of dub-step aesthetics, jungle basics, improvisation, breakbeats and and live instrumentation, making it one of the most exciting records of last year.
