After a long wait, the dance music scene has finally been blessed with a full-length album from UK funky house prodigy Cooly G in the Summer of 2012. Soaring away from the constrictions of genre,
Playin' Me brings the sensuality of funky house together with the visceral qualities of the best pop music. Influenced by both her hometown London and the sound of her second home, Kode 9's Hyperdub label, perhaps the most succinct evocation of the album is a lyric from the record itself: "welcome to my world / landscapes that I have / leave your thoughts aside / dive into my ride".
On
Playin’ Me, Cooly G displays the full spectrum of her sound, plummeting from her sometimes melancholy, sometimes romantic songs through to her more menacing, trackier sound. Recorded without any frills in her home studio, the album simultaneously recalls a legacy of black British music, filtering the female pressure and reggae lilt of lovers rock’s kitchen sink dramas, the sweet seduction of 80’s quiet storm, through to sour, bitter-sweet synths, polyrhythmic dub decay of early jungle and tough tribal drums.
Cooly G live in Brixton, South London. She’s the second female producer on Hyperdub alongside Ikonika and runs the monthly night The Producer’s House at Babalou in Brixton.
