Deadbeat is Berlin-based, Canadian ex-pat Scott Monteith. He’s released six full-length albums; collaborating on the most recent,
Roots and Wire (Wagon Repair, 2008), with dub vocalist, Paul St. Hilaire (aka Tikiman). A key player from the Montréal scene around MUTEK, Monteith has been releasing dub oriented, groove based computer music since 1998 for labels like Cynosure, Force Inc, Intr_version, Revolver, and Scape.
In June 2011 he released the first album on his new own imprint BLKRTZ,
Drawn & Quartered.
Over the last decade, Monteith has switched from Canadian based producer releasing on a Berlin label (~scape), to a Berlin based producer releasing on a Canadian label, (Wagon Repair). Originally from Kitchener, Ontario, his musical career began when he met friends and future collaborators Mike Shannon and Jeff Milligan on weekend clubbing trips to Toronto. In 94, he started djing, and in 96 he moved to Montreal, where he became immediately involved in the emerging music scene there, which included Akufen and Tim Hecker. Alongside djing and production, he began organizing parties with roommate Steve Beaupre (partner in sampling-duo Crackhaus) under the name Covert Ops, and became an integral part of the MUTEK milieu.
Between 1999 and 2003 Scott also worked for Montreal-based music software company Applied Acoustics Systems (AAS), spends time building new instruments (using AAS' Tassman as well as Native Instruments' Reaktor). After his debut album on Intr_version,
Primordia, (an investigation of dub on the cellular level) and a string of 12-inches, Monteith’s MUTEK connection led to a long standing association with lauded Berlin label, ~scape, beginning with the release of his sophomore Deadbeat album,
Wildlife Documentaries (2002), and followed by three more full-lengths, as well as collaborations with label boss, Pole (Stefan Betke) over the next several years.
Monteith’s relocation to Berlin in 2006 allowed collaborations to flourish, while at the same time, counterinuitively, strengthening connections with Canadian labels – Mike Shannon’s Cynosure and, more recently, Mathew Jonson and Konrad Black’s Wagon Repair.
For his most recent album,
Roots and Wire (Wagon Repair, 2008), and the accompanying live performances, Montheith brought Berlin’s renowned dub vocalist
Tikiman on board, best known for his work with Rhythm&Sound. Deadbeat has also collaborated with
Monolake (Robert Henke), enlisting him as a remixer and performing together live.
