Dirty Sound System, Parisian DJ duo Guillaume Sorge and Clovis Goux, has garnered acclaim for their limited edition re-edits by cohort
Pilooski. Calling themselves "selectors", Sorge and Goux have been DJing and compiling together since 2000. After putting together the first
Dirty Diamonds compilation, the crew teamed up with Pilooski to produce edits including 2007's hit "Beggin"
, and have since released a two more compilations for Diamond Traxx and an bunch of EPs on their own Dirty imprint, plus a
compilation on Tigersushi.
The Dirty Sound System is at the helm of a larger organism called Dirty – a Parisian music crew, label, website and blog made up of Sorge, Goux, regular collaborator Benjamin Morando (aka
Discodeine, Octet and Pentile) and others. Sorge is a sound designer, music editor and party promoter; Goux is a journalist; and Morando is a musician. The Dirty crew curated a series of interviews and mixes from the likes of Luke Vibert, Optimo on their free-for-all blog
alainfinkielkrautrock.com, which dates back to 2006.
Sorge, Goux, and Morando put together the
Dirty Diamonds trilogy for French label Diamond Traxx run by Benjamin Diamond. They mixed
old music, obscure dancefloor tracks, rare pop and "unclassics" with
new material with no style, genre or era distinction. The formula, along with the surreal cover art, was a hit in 2003 when the first instalment arrived, and again in late 2004 when
Dirty Diamonds II appeared, and again in 2006 when the final CD in the trilogy dropped. When the Dirty crew met DJ and hip-hop producer Pilooski, they started the
Dirty Edits series together, a string of edited classic and/or forgotten songs. Originally released as a series on vinyl, the edits later appeared as a double CD compilation on Discograph,
Dirty Edits Vol.1 & 2 – A Collection Of Dirty Classics Selected By Dirty Sound System Edited By Pilooski (2007). The edit series got support from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Simian Mobile Disco, Tiga and Ivan Smagghe. The release that first set the Dirty crew apart was Pilooski's 2007 edit of Frankie Valli's northern soul number "Beggin", which was successful enough to bring the major labels calling. Warner UK sub 679 Recordings re-released the edit, and the track got worldwide exposure and extensive radio airplay. The Dirty crew then teamed up with
Joakim’s label Tigersushi to release the
Dirty Space Disco compilation, a selection of originals and Poolski edited tracks.
The first step beyond the edits/reissue formula for the Dirty Crew was the
Texas Gladiators EP by
Discodeine, the Pilooski and Benjamin Morando duo. Discodeine has since released a second EP on Dirty and there is an album in the works.
The Dirty Sound System plays regularly at their bi-monthly D.I.R.T.Y night at Social Club in Paris.
