UK singer
Ebony Bones has become an underground idol. She picked up enough word-of-mouth (read: MySpace) buzz in the UK to be offered a coveted spot in the 2007 Glastonbury Festival roster. Her productions are a punky mix of B52s, the Pixies and Barbarella, and she cites Siouxsie Sioux and Afrika Bambaataa as her main influences. Bones first song, co produced with the Dammed drummer
Rat Scabies, became a Myspace hit. She’s since achieved considerable notoriety for her irreverent lyrics, crude jokes and wild stage presence.
A showbiz veteran, Ebony Bones (née Ebony Thomas b.1982), was previously an actress best known in Britain for playing the role of sex-kitten Yasmin on the soap opera ‘Family Affairs,’ from 1998 until 2005. She was one of the program's longest-serving cast members. A former student of the Sylvia Young Theatre School, other credits include a small role in the film
Virtual Sexuality released in 1999,
Samson Superbug and Grange Hill. In 2002, 2003 and 2004 Thomas was nominated for The British Soap Awards ‘Sexiest female’.
Thomas gave up acting to team up with Rat Scabies, aka Chris Millar, drummer with Damned from 1977 to 1995, to pursue a music career. Though she learnt guitar, clarinet violin as a child, she describes herself as self-taught, and since learned to play other instruments. She began producing after meeting Rat Scabies in a pub, who offered to play drums with her.
Bones' debut single
We Know All About You has a sound she describes as 'DIY - stripped down, raw, abrasive'. The song was recently given full release, available in mp3 format and on 7" vinyl. The single has gotten considerable airplay in the UK, charting on the playlists of Zane Low and Pete Tong of BBC1. Other songs include
Don’t Fart on My Heart, and
I’m Your Future Ex-wife. Although still unsigned, Thomas is associated with Primary International, the booking arm of the British label XL Recordings, the City Beat offshoot best known for a roster that includes Basement Jaxx, M.I.A., and Prodigy.
Thomas has recently begun working with producer Richard X (aka Richard Philips, renowned for production credits with Sugababes, Kelis, Liberty X and Rachel Stevens) In late 2007, they collaborated on a song called
Kissing the Wrong Boots.
Ebony Bones will appear with a backing band made up of Kysha Charles, Joe Ryan, David Preston, James Murphy, Barry Godin, and Fiona Prince.
