Efterklang, from Denmark, are a folktronica/post-pop quintet that rose to prominence with their 2004 album Tripper. Efterklang, meaning reverberation, trace or memory (literally: after-sound) in Danish, have developed a signature style without any clear antecedents: warm orchestrations and skittery electronics with pop hooks that often take a while to arrive. The music is multi layered and melodic, employing a vast array of different instruments.
 
The core group is made up of five: Mads Brauer, who makes digital contributions via computer; Casper Clausen who sings and plays various instruments; Thomas Husmer, who plays drum, trumpet and does choir duty; Rune Fonseca Mølgaard, who plays piano, and Rasmus Stolberg, who plays guitar, various other instruments and sings. The band had its beginnings on a small Danish island called Als, north of the German Border in the Baltic Sea. Mads Brauer and Rasmus Stolberg, who grew up on the island, became friends in kindergarten and began playing together in the fifth grade. They later befriendeded Casper Clausen, and recruited him into their fledgling group. After playing together for a few years, the trio set off for Copenhagen where they met Rune Mølgaard and Thomas Husmer, forming Efterklang in December 2000. Mads Brauer and Casper Clausen compose most of the songs, while all members are involved in recording and organization.
 
For live performances, Efterklang are joined by four other musicians, violinist/singer Peter Broderick, trombonist/singer Niklas Antonson, pianist/singer Anna Brønsted and guitarist/singer Frederik Teige.
 
Efterklang’s long player debut, Tripper, appeared on UK left-field label Leaf in 2004. The album’s mixture of multilayered vocals, electronic rhythms and string arrangements won it wide acclaim, and Tripper became the underground hit of the year, still standing as the fastest selling debut album in Leaf's history. Since the early days, the group have maintained a self-sufficient, DIY working method that is still applied to everything from writing, recording and producing to organization and management of the band’s career. They established their own record label called Rumraket (the Danish word for space rocket) in 2003 to release their first EP Springer (later re-released on Leaf). The Rumraket roster now includes amiina, Cacoy, Erik Levander, Grizzly Bear, Kama Aina, Slaraffenland, Taxi Taxi! and Canon Blue.
 
In the spring of 2007, the mini-album Under Giant Trees (Leaf) was released. It was more boldly pop than its predecessor, and debuted at the top of the Danish singles chart. In autumn, their second full length, Parade was released. Unlike their previous, mostly electronic releases, Parade was mostly acoustic. The band relied less on digital techniques and in many cases recorded in situ in large rooms, churches, bathrooms and hallways, even an echo chamber. The recording took 18 months and involved more than thirty guest musicians including a string quartet, a brass quintet and three separate choirs.
 
Another key contributor is Nan Na Hvass who is the mastermind behind the critically acclaimed artwork for Under Giant Trees, Parades and the Mirador video (Oct. 2007).
 
Mads Brauer and Casper Clausen have also scored a Danish animation feature by Anders Morgenthaler.
