Resident of Frankfurt, Ekkehard Ehlers has been extremely productive in recent years. With a string of releases on Mille Plateaux which include both solo work (“Betrieb” is an interpretation of material by Arnold Sachönberg and Charles Ives) and the work of joint projects such as Autopoieses (“La Vie À Noir”, 1999) and Auch. He is well known for his series entitled "Ekkehard Ehlers plays ..." with tributes to free jazz saxophone player Albert Ayler, blues singer Robert Johnson, director John Cassavetes and writer Hubert Fichte (Staubgold, 2002). In addition he runs his own label, Whatness, which lies at the juncture between music and art and has featured releases from internationally renown artists like Liam Gillick, Joseph Suchy, Frank Brettschneider, Stephen Galloway, Scott Ohlson, Markus Schmickler, Bill Forsythe, Olafur Eliasson, Peter Röhr and himself.
