Christian Fennesz creates shimmering, swirling electronic sound of enormous range and complex musicality. He combines dense, multilayered sheets of treated guitar and synth with thin, odd-metered electronic percussion and engaging sampler work. His densely layered compositions have an inherent naturalism, evocative of light, texture and atmosphere. His solo albums Endless Summer (Mego, 2001) and Venice (Touch, 2004) achieved widespread critical and popular acclaim.
A former member of Austrian underground experimental rock group Maische, Fennesz has performed numerous times (both solo and in collaboration) at various festivals (Phonotaktik, Hyperstrings, Sonar, ARS Electronica...). Among Fennesz’ innovative collaborations are the sound scores he continues to create for the video installations of artist Gina Czarnecki, and Cendre (Touch, 2007) his recent album release with composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. He has recorded with artists such as Keith Rowe, Sparklehorse and David Sylvian, and he was part of the improvisational trio Fenn O'Berg with Peter Rehberg and Jim O'Rourke. He plays live with Sakamoto and performs alongside singer Mike Patton.
Fennesz lives and works between Vienna and Paris.
