Freund, Tobias |
Freund has been involved in the music business for nearly 25 years and as a sound engineer for 18 of those. With Dandy Jack he is Sieg Über Die Sonne, with Uwe Schmidt Atom™ & Pink Elln, with Max Loderbauer, nsi, and with Ricardo Villalobos, Odd Machine. Freund also records solo under the name Pink Elln for techno and Tobias for house. He has put out a vast amount of music across a huge variety of labels from Cadenza, Ostgut Ton and Logistic to the Finnish label Sähkö.
Tobias Freund was born near Frankfurt where he lived until moving to Berlin in 2003. He bought his first synthesizer, a Korg MS-20, in 1980 with the money earned from summer jobs. Finishing school in 1983, he completed civil service before starting work in a recording studio as an apprentice. Years later, after engineering and mixing some successful productions like Milli Vanilli and Meat Loaf, he quit his job to concentrate on making his own music. In 1989 he founded Sieg Über die Sonne with Martin Schopf (aka Dandy Jack). Their first 12” was released in 1991 on the now defunct early Hardcore/rave label, Cyclotron, of Frankfurt. They went on to release a swag of EPs and albums across a range of labels including Multicolor Recordings and Sony Germany, their most production was in 2006 on Cynosure; they played countless European clubs and festivals including La Villette, Rex Club, Le Batofar (Paris), Fabric (London) and Vision (Switzerland). Sieg Über die Sonne has also done remixes for artists such as Sun Electric, Dr. Motte, Sensorama, Plaid, Ricardo Villalobos, Tobi Neumann and 2Raumwohnung.
In 1993, Freund began producing and performing under the alias Pink Elln, often in collaboration with Uwe Schmidt (Atom Heart, Atom™), but also solo or with other artists, releasing on labels including Ongaku Musik, Platipus, Cynosure and, most recently, the French Logistic Records.
Max Loderbauer and Tobias Freund began collaborating in 2005, in a project that serve as a vehicle to explore both dancefloor and experimental minimalism. As nsi (Non Standard Institute) Freund and Loderbauer released two quirky EPs on Luciano’s Cadenza before their unexpected album release on Sähkö. Non Standard Institute Plays Non Standards, a surprising exploration of piano and vintage electronics, was released in 2007 to critical acclaim. In the same year the pair founded a new label, Non Standard Productions to release both their own music as nsi, their music in other constellations – Freund under the moniker MFP, Freund with Villalobos as Odd Machine – and music of other artists, Margret Dygas (See You Around, 2008).
