Dan Friel (keyboards, electronics, guitar, voice) has been active since 2001 when he independently released
Broken Man Going to Work. In 2002, he founded Brooklyn-based noise-pop band Parts & Labor, with BJ Warshaw (of Shooting Spires), and later Joe Wong. Friel and Warshaw created Cardboard Records, home to
Ecstatic Sunshine, in 2005, and Friel’s third solo LP,
Ghost Town (Important Records) was released in 2008.
Friel, erstwhile receptionist at satiric news portal, The Onion, has been involved in music with a DIY aesthetic for the best part of a decade. After early noise-grind band experiments using homemade electronics and horns, Friel pursued solo projects. He independently released a solo mini-album on CD,
Broken Man Going to Work, and began touring to promote it. Wanting a more dynamic live performance, Friel recruited bassist BJ Warshaw and drummer Jim Sykes to perform his music as Parts & Labor.
Over the years, Parts & Labor have released four LPs including a split with Tyondai Braxton (Battles), and a string of seven inches. The line-up evolved to include Christopher R. Weingarten, and, more recently, guitar player Sarah Lipstate (aka Novella). Meanwhile, Friel continued with his solo work: Night People released the cassette-only
Obsoleter in 2006 and Velocirecords put out his
Sunburn CD in 2004.
