Funckarama's restless momentum is underpinned by reliably jagged beats, dense basswork and an engulfing synergism. Funckarama is just one of dozens of projects the Funkens are involved with – with Shadow Huntaz, they produce experimental; Cane is an acid-electro incarnation (Warp Records). Recent years have seen dubstep explorations on Highpoint Lowlife, and the pair has drawn on drum&bass, ambient, hip-hop, and dub for their latest full-length Vell Vagranz (n5MD), their first under the Funckarma alias since Bion Glent (2006 Sublight).
 
The brothers, Don Funcken and Roel Funcken, are from The Hague, Netherlands. They debuted with Part 1 on Rotterdam’s Djak-Up-Bitch in 1999, with obvious debts to Autechre and Funktörong (who both contributed remixes). Broadening to the first of their many alter egos in 2000; Quench, they brothers demonstrated a move into grittier territories with A Journey into the Electonix. Funckarma’s Part 2, which came out in the same year, hinted at the 'dub hop' sound that would come to the fore in future releases. Funckarma's first full-length, Solid State, was released in 2001 at the same time as the brothers created Cenik, their dark, experimental ambient project. Cenik saw several releases on Miami-based imprint, Isophlux.
 
Cane, the acid, dancefloor oriented project appeared in 2004 on Colony Productions, a London label. Shadow Huntaz, a collaboration between the Funken brothers and hip-hop artists Dream, and Nongenetic, began at the turn of the century with releases on Plug Research and Manchester’s Skam Records. Two full lengths (2003's Corrupt Data and 2005's Valley Of The Shadow) and three instrumental comps credited to the Funckens.
