Prolific French-Canadian producer Guillaume Coutu Dumont is behind the band of the same name. From the Montréal scene but now based in Berlin, Coutu Dumont spent the last two years building a catalogue on labels like Musique Risquée, Circus Company and Oslo. After starting out in a funk band, Coutu Dumont began his recording career in 2003 as one half of the duo Egg with Julian Roy (
artificiel.org) on Mutek’s publishing arm. He released his debut solo album,
Face à L’est, on Musique Risquée in 2007.
Picking up percussion at seventeen, the Montréaler started out as playing in a funk band, after which he studied latin and classical percussion in college. In 2001 he went to Africa as a percussionist with a jazz band called [iks]. He recorded two albums and toured for several months in Senegal with [iks], spending three months in a small village called Linguère.
Soon after, Coutu Dumont discovered electro-acoustic composition, which he went on to study at university. Before finishing, Coutu Dumont was introduced to techno by Julian Roy (artificiel.org) and the two teamed up to become the duo Egg. They made their recording debut on Mutek_Rec with the album,
Don't Postpone Joy, in 2003. Coutu Dumont has been involved in a number of collaborative projects since, including Luci with David Fafard (Mutek_rec, Morris Audio), Chic Miniature with
Ernesto Ferreyra (Raummusik, Musique Risquée), Flabbergast with
Vincent Lemieux (Mutek_rec), as well as the artist collective Racam. More recently Coutu Dumont has been part of Per Eckbo Orchestra, a project with Federico Molinari that has seen a release on Oslo with tracks appearing on Poker Flat and Cocoon mix CDs.
Guillaume Coutu Dumont made his debut as a band Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts on the Mutek festival label, Mutek_Rec in 2006 with
Sélection Surnaturelle, an EP more renowned for its cover art than its contents. But the following year the output of Guillaume and the Coutu Dumonts outstripped anything that had come before. With outings on Floppy Funk, Oslo, Hartchef Discos, Circus Company, his full-length debut on Montreal’s Mutek related Musique Risquée –
Face à L’est – and remixes for Get Physical and Crosstown Rebels, Coutu Dumont was suddenly one to watch.
