Berlin based Jan Jelinek is a musician, producer, label manager and remixer who draws inspiration from jazz, dub, funk, soul and house. He has released music on ~scape under his own name, with his band Groupshow and elsewhere under a variety of other monikers including Farben, Gramm and The Exposures. He now runs the label Faitiche where he releases music from undiscovered geniuses.
Jelinek was born in Darmstadt in southwest Germany. After starting out as record collector dub, jazz, funk and soul he began making music when he discovered house in the 90s. Jelinek moved to Berlin in 1995, ostensibly to get a philosophy/sociology degree, and began releasing records under the moniker Farben on Klang Elektronik, starting in 1998 with a self-titled 12-inch. His work as Farben culminated in the now classic album,
Textstar.
Jelinek went on to dissect and suture together jazz samples for his well-known
Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records released on ~scape in 2001. On his next album,
la nouvelle pauvrete (~scape 2003), he joined forces with the imaginary band The Exposures. In the mid 00s, Jelinek switched gear and began producing music with a live, instrumental feel starting with 2005s
Kosmischer Pitch, and followed by
Tierbeobachtungen, both under his own name and began playing with an actual band rather than just imaginary ones.
Groupshow (aka Center of Excellence), Jelineks improvisation trio with drummer/percussionist Hanno Leichtmann (Static,
Vulva String Quartett) and guitarist
Andrew Pekler (Sad Rockets), was put together to perform
Kosmischer Pitch live, but has since evolved into an independent entity. The emphasis on live performance did not preclude the release of full-length album (distilled from countless performance hours) called
The Martyrdoom of Groupshow on ~scape in 2009. Jelinek has also collaborated with the Australian jazz trio, Triosk, and the Japanese improvisation group, Computer Soup.
