Lichens is Chicago-based Robert A. A. Lowe. Previously the bassist of the (now defunct) 90 Day Men, Lowe has been exploring minimalist and drone possibilities with Lichens since 2004, and Kranky released his first solo album The Psychic Nature of Being in 2005. Lowe has since released a second solo full-length, Omns (Kranky 2007) and several collaborative works with artists such as Cloudland Canyon and drone duo White/Light.
 
On Lowe's solo debut album as Lichens The Psychic Nature of Being (Kranky 2005) he created otherworldly atmospheres using primarily his voice, a guitar and effects; a big departure from his previous work as a bassist. Each track was recorded as a one-take improvisation without any overdubbing or editing. 
 
In 2005, Lowe embarked on a collaboration with drone duo White/Light, recorded between July 2005 and May 2006 at Semaphore and Lowe/Light Laboratories. The highly praised result was released on prominent doom/drone/psych label Holy Mountain in 2007, White/Lichens – s/t. 2007 also saw the release of experimental/ambient Exterminating Angel (Holy Mountain), a collaboration between psychedelic band Cloudland Canyon and Lichens.
