Luci (Mutek _Rec, Morris Audio City Sport) is a new project for long time collaborators Guillaume Coutu Dumont (Egg, Flabbergast, Racam and nAnalog) and David Fafard (nAnalog).
Based in Montréal, Dumont and Fafard also work together in nAnalog, a video art project exploring the image-sound relationship through multi media and installation. nAnalog has collaborated with artists such as Crackhaus, Senor Coconut (Mutek 2003) and Monolake (Mutek 2005).
Both come from strong percussion and composition backgrounds, though Fafard has made a name for himself primarily as a video artist, providing the Montréal Techno community with visuals for several years. He is also involved in theatre productions (What Remains, Danceworks/Louise Bedard Danse Production, 2005), and other video projects.
Dumont was until recently was known primarily as a percussionist with an interest in electro-acoustic compostion. He has extensive experience as a session musician playing in both far flung festivals like the St Louis Jazz festival in Senegal, and events closer to home: Mutek and the International Jazz Festival of Montréal. Dumont has since broadened the frame of his work to laptop music. He is one half of the well-known duo Egg.
The Luci project uses the same set of tools cultivated by Egg, which were developed with experimental leanings, and an interest in danceable Dub and Microhouse blended with acoustic instrumentation. But while Egg tends toward the introspective, Luci is known for hypnotic, funky floor fillers. Elastic rhythms and complex structures, noirish beats and ornate samples come together in beautifully produced tracks.
