Maza, Marisa |
Marisa Maza is a media artist who works in the field of video and photography. She has lived and worked in Berlin since 1989 and completed her postgraduate studies in the field of Fine Arts and Media Studies at the Fine Arts University of Berlin (Hochschule der Künste Berlin, 1999 with Prof. Katharina Sieverding). From 2005-07, she was a visiting artist at the College of Fine Arts, University of Florida, USA.
Maza’s works have been shown in national and international group and solo shows, e.g. the CCE in Miami, USA; the Centre d'art Passerelle, Brest, France; the Galerie Gebauer, Berlin; the National Centre of Contemporary Art, Moskau; and the "ARTissima 8" (International Fair of Contemporary Art, Turin). Maza is the recipient of numerous grants and prizes, e.g. the International Studio Program Award for Istanbul (2008-09, supported by the International Artist Exchange Program, Berlin); the studio prize of the Karl Hofer Society (2005); and a stipend for artistic research in South Africa, Tanzania and New York by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD-NaFöG).
Since the early 1990s, Maza’s work has focused on issues of gender, sexuality and identity as well as on the political and social construcution of bodies and their media representation. Furthermore, the human body and typologies of real, fictional and/or simulated (urban) landscapes were thematized as (metaphorical) systems for the inscription of sociopolitical conditions.
