Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Ian Lampel is a producer, bass player and sound designer, nurtured by the vision and production techniques of hip hop, dub, jazz and electronica. Since his first musical experiences he became interested in the mixture of the organic and the synthetic, in the crossroads of old and new languages alike, producing, digging and researching with the intention of creating music with both a local and global character, from Uruguay and South America, to the world. In 2004 he launched the Uruguayan label & collective Ouzomusic, a reference in the Latin American electronica scene, one of the first labels in the continent (and first in Uruguay) to release free music in Mp3 format. Besides Meti´s full band formation, he plays alone or in a duo with Eco Lopez (vocals), under the Metis (Live Set) alias. Taking the project’s aesthetic to a new context, Ian uses his laptop, midi controllers and various instruments to weave a live/dj-set hybrid, which intertwines his own productions, Eco Lopez compositions and atmospheric vocals, reworked tracks from Metis, tracks from South America’s and Uruguay’s past and present, obscure digger gems, and fresh new edits... The result, a wild ride with strokes of jazz, bass music, dub, hip hop, experimental electronics and world music, creating a dialog between past, present and future musical languages of his continent and the world.
