Micachu is Mica Levi. Since her debut single 'Lone Ranger' appeared in May 2008 on Brikabrak, the young singer has had a cult following. Lead vocals for the single were by Taza, and the record was produced by Matthew Herbert. Levi followed up with 'Golden Phone' on Herbert’s label Accidental. Levi is in her third year studying composition at the Guildhall School of Music – currently taking a year out to produce a Micachu album – and was commissioned to write an orchestral piece for the London Philharmonic which was performed in 2008. Micachu and the Shapes have been together since December 2007.
Mica Levi (1987) studied violin, viola and composition at the Purcell School before being offered a scholarship to attend the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to study composition. At Purcell she spent eight years focussing primarily on the viola. She started experimenting with electronic music when studying for her GCSE’s and began getting involved in Garage, Hip Hop and Electro as well as more experimental forms. Her talent as composer was given recognition when Mark Anthony Turnage commissioning her to write an orchestral piece for the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The piece was performed in 2008.
Levi’s debut single, debut single 'Lone Ranger' in May 2008, was released on Brikabrak. It featured the voice of Levi’s friend, Taza, was produced by Levi and then polished up by Matthew Herbert. The follow-up 'Golden Phone', released in August, was an immediate success and triggered invitations to perform across Europe. The three-member band is Levi, Marc Pell on drums and Raisa Khanwas on keyboard/percussion. They got together in December, though the three have known each other for two years after meeting in college.
In late 2008 Levi made a mix tape available for free download from her myspace page under the alias 'Micachu' called 'Filthy Friends' featuring Man Like Me, Ghost Poet, Taza, Miss Bienek, Toddla T, Baker Trouble, Bruva May, Naked and the Boys, The Golden Silvers, Troyker and various remixes. Levi is currently making an album with Matthew Herbert for Accidental Records.
