NHK is a collaborative project by Kouhei Matsunaga and Toshio Munehiro, musicians who have been working together since 2006 when they both lived in Osaka. Both artists are now based in Berlin. NHK’s EP of roughly hewn techno,
unununium, was released by raster-noton in 2008. Kouhei has been making music since 1992 focusing on experimental compositions. He has worked with artists such as Merzbow, Asmus Tietchens, Sean Booth (Autechre) and
Pan Sonic’s
Mika Vainio.
NHK had its beginnings in an Osakan electronic music event called ‘Handshake’ in 2005 organised by Matsunaga where Toshio Munehiro performed. Kouhei Matsunaga was born in Osaka. After studying architecture, he began making hardcore electronic music in the early 90s. In 1998, revered German label Mille Plateaux released Matsunaga’s debut album,
Upside Down. Three years later a split CD of Merzbow and Matsunaga was released on Tigerbeat, the first of a cluster releases in 2002 that included collaborations with Jon Watermann and Rudolf Eb.er. Matsunaga’s second album came in 2003,
Time to Move with Glass on Blade Records, followed by another in 2005,
For Gemini And Back To Heian on Frankfurt based imprint Feld.
2006 saw Matsunaga release an industrial/hip-hop album under the name Kohei in collaboration with experimental hip-hop artist Sensational (ex Jungle Brothers). The album,
Sensational meets Kohei, was released on abstract hip-hop imprint Word and Sound. Matsunaga does regular behind the scenes production work for Word and Sound and other labels.
YAK (Monochrome Vision), a remix project with Y-Ton-G and Asmus Tiechens, was released in 2007.
2008 was a busy year for Matsunaga with NHK’s raster-noton project, as well as collaborations with Mika Vainio and Sean Booth in production. Matsunaga is working with Sensational, Max Turner, Paul pm (Puppetmastaz) under the name Koyxen for an EP scheduled to appear on <Wordsound/Mesk Records>. Musician Toshio Munehiro (1979) was born in Kobe.
