Peverelist is Tom Ford, mainstay of Rooted Records – Bristol’s
dubstep specialist shop – and curator of the increasingly essential
Punch Drunk Records. After debuting in 2007 with
Erstwhile Rhythm/The Grind (Punch Drunk) the tracks billed as the first techno/dubstep hybrid, the next year was golden for Ford with a remix for ~scape, a collaboration with Appleblim on Skull Disco and series of acclaimed 12”s on his own label. Peverlist’s tracks receive support from techno DJs like
Luciano, Craig Richards and Surgeon as well as key dubstep players.
Ford grew up in Essex, and as a teenager was in bands before become immersed in electronic music through jungle and garage. While still in his Essex hometown of Hatfield Peverel, Ford began DJing under the name "Hatfield Peverel Junglist Massive". He moved to Bristol ten years ago to pursue his interest in music, inspired by drum and bass crews Full Cycle and the dub/ breaks of Smith & Mighty. An interest in grime – Wiley and Danny Weed – segued into a passion for dubstep in 2004. In Bristol Ford became the proprietor of the city’s only specialist grime/dubstep shop, Rooted Records, which opened at the end of the 90s. In 2006 he launched one of its more notable labels, Punch Drunk Records, as a showcase for Bristol artists. The first release was
Lighthouse Dub from Monkey Steak, and Ford himself didn’t release anything until a year later when he dropped his first 12”
Erstwhile Rhythm / The Grind.
Erstwhile Rhythm bridged the gap between the hypnotic minimal techno patterns and the heavyweight polyrhthmic contortions of established dubsteppers like Mala, hovering between dubstep and techno, catching the attention of minimal techno DJs like
Ricardo Villalobos. Berlin dub producer
Pole also took notice of Ford’s techno inflected dubstep, asking Peverelist to remix the
Steingarten track
Winkelstreben.
Ford produces a delicate, rhythmically complex interpretation bringing the
influences of two-step and Basic Channel-style dub techno into the dubstep sound. Ford’s acclaimed collaboration with Appleblim,
Soundboy's Ashes Get Hacked Up And Spat Out In Disgust EP (Skull Disco), won more converts; he was asked to mix for Mary Ann Hobbs’ special techno/dubstep crossover broadcast in June, 2008 with Dutch cross-overist, 2562. Peverelist’s recent hit
Clunk Click Every Trip (Punch Drunk) dropped in November 2008.
