The duo Purform (Alain Thibault: sound, and Yan Breuleux: image) focusses on the creation of devices used for performances and installations alike.
Alain Thibault
Alain Thibault was born in Québec City in 1956. His music has been performed in Canada and abroad, amongst others, by the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) in Montréal, by New Music Concerts in Toronto, at Digicon ’85, the 2nd Conference on Computer Art and Creativity, in Vancouver (British Columbia), at the Bourges International Experimental Music Festival, Synthèse (France), and in Tokyo (Japan). In 1982 he received top honors in the electroacoustic category of the CBC National Competition for Young Composers, for Sonergie. In 1986 he won the Sound Page Competition held by the American magazine Keyboard for his Fairlight synthesizer piece God’s Greatest Gift. In the area of multimedia, he has collaborated with visual artists on: Déca-Dance, E.L.V.I.S. and OUT. He has participated on a variety of performances, theater productions and concerts, both as a composer and/or synthesizer programmer. Alain Thibault is a founding member of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC). He studied composition at the Faculty of Music of Université de Montréal where he taught electroacoustic techniques from 1984 to 1988. Thibault is the organizer of the Elektra festival based in Montreal.
Yan Breuleux
Yan Breuleux completed his collegiate and university studies in visual arts. His artistic production is dedicated to video and the electronic arts. Over the last few years, he has produced a great number of videos and performances mixing music and images, mostly in collaboration with other artists, composers and performers. Notable is his musical video series Noise, A-B-C Light and Clima(x) produced in collaboration with the composer Alain Thibault. The project received an honorable mention at the Prix Ars Electronica (1998) and a nomination in the category of best video of the year at the Rendez-Vous du Cinéma Québécois 1999. In 2000, Yan Breuleux was invited to present A-Live at the transmediale festival. The project entitled Faustechnology, again in collaboration with Alain Thibault, was presented at Elektra in Montréal as well as at the Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts Symposium in Paris. Breuleux also works as a VJ.
