Gerwald Rockenshaub was born in 1952 in Austria, and now lives and works in Berlin and Vienna. He has exhibited internationally since 1981. He represented Austria at the 45th Venice Biennial in 1993. ‘Funky Minimal’, his retrospective, was shown at the Hamburger Kunstverein and Le Consortium, Centre d’art contemporain, Dijon, in 1999. Rockenschaub’s sculpture forces us to contemplate the visual culture that mass media have made dominate our lives. Blurring the distinction between the ‘functional’ and the ‘non functional’ object, Rockenschaub’s giant inflated objects for example possess an immateriality that challenges conceptions of space itself. His structures as a whole often seem like functional objects but are represented in such a way as to show their potential to contain much deeper significance. Rockenschaub thus shows us through his art a world between the boundaries of art and our own uncertain lives.
