Scuba (Paul Rose) is head of Hotflush Recordings, one of London’s most respected dubstep labels. Rose has been active as a DJ and producer since the start of the 00s, releasing a string of seminal EPs that cemented his reputation early. He relocated to Berlin shortly before the release of his well-received debut,
A Mutual Antipathy (2008, Hotflush). Paul Rose is, with Paul Fowler, behind the SUB:STANCE night at Berlin’s Berghain.
After spending his formative years listening to the Pet Shop Boys Iron Maiden, Rose learnt to play guitar and spent some time in an indie band before moving on to electronic music and segueing into the role of garage and dubstep DJ. Rose made his production debut under the moniker Spectr in 2003 with the inaugural release for his label, Hotflush Recordings. Hotflush was an early champion of the dubstep sound. It helped launch careers of DJ Distance, Toasty, Boxcutter and the like, and artist on the roster since have included Benga, jazzsteppa, trg, Untold and Shakleton. Hotflush describes itself as 'dub gothic techno'.
In 2005, Rose began circulating mixes under his given name: Paul Rose N4 mix (Dec 2005) and Paul Rose Dub n Breaks mix (Feb 2005), to name two. 2005 was also the year he donned the Scuba moniker, beginning with the Timba / Sleepa 12” on Hotflush. By 2007, Rose had expanded Hotflush with the sublabels Abucs and Hotshore (a collaboration with NY dnb imprint Offshore Recordings), and relocated to Berlin.
Not long after the move came Rose’s debut long player,
A Mutual Antipathy (Hotflush), an album that was seen as being influenced by Berlin’s dubtechno traditions. The sound combined elements of 90s electronica, ambient and techno with dubstep. The project was subsequently developed with a series of remixes by Surgeon, Substance, Jamie Vex’d, Martyn, Marcel Dettmann, and Rose himself under the new, techno oriented moniker, SCB.
Rose has since continued with techno explorations with the name SCB, putting together a mix for the MNML SSGS blog. Rose also organises the successful SUB:STANCE night at Berghain with Paul Fowler (former owner of the label Spymania). A regular event since July 2008, the parties have featured Mala, Shackleton, Appleblim, Distance, and T++ among others. The pair recently extended the project to 'global' with parties held in New York.
