Shoboshobo is a collective based in Paris that produces on
graphic design, art installations and fashion design. The group has a large network of contributing members based around the original founders
Mehdi Hercberg and Khanh-linh La.
The group’s original raison d'être was the organization of experimental music events in Paris with the aim, predominantly, of melding Japanese with French electro-experimental. The first concert was organised at the end of 2001, and held at the applied arts school Duperré. The evening featured performers Phirip, Hirono Nishiyama, Takagi Masakatsu, Aoki Takamasa and Lozi. After 2004, Shoboshobo began to focusing more on graphics and fashion. They have a distinctive art brut style featuring vivid characters and bold design, and are known for large, intensely detailed wall murals. They also produce limited edition zines (5 issues) through
SHOBOSHOBO-BOOKS.
In 2005, Shoboshobo members went on tour in Japan; Mehdi Hercberg, Olivier Lamm, Davide Balula and Stephane Laporte performed concerts and staged exhibitions at galleries and other venues. Shoboshobo were invited to the 2007 MUTEK festival in Montreal where they performed concerts and painted large murals, and were also invited to the Berlin
Pictoplasma Character Conference. They have also presented work at the Agnes B gallery, Active Suspension parties, and at Confluences for the Pixel Ache festival in Paris.
