Single Unit is Norwegian Are Mokkelbost's solo project that best is described as electrometalnoise, an odd mix genre, which he is deadly serious about. Single Unit released his solo album Family of Forces on Jester records in 2001 and has since toured a lot in Europe and the States. Are is also a member of the electronica trio Arm (that played at NEON in January this year) and with the data-metal/digi-core band
Kill with his brother and friends. But Are is really an educated artist, something he has not let go despite his success in the music world. Inspired by the diversity of styles and influences the critics were overwhelmed by Single Unit's release, praising it as weird, great, Future of music, and even the “best album ever made”.
“I want to make music that deals with many of the qualities of the different music I listen to. That’s a very general statement, so to be more concrete this is things like the complex percussion of metal & hardcore, the precision of IDM, the abstraction and melodies of electronica, the uncommunicative and conceptual sound of electro-acoustics, the alienated, empty and angsty sound of the modernist composers, the uncontrolled and intuitive energy of improve, the egomaniacal expressiveness and melodies of black metal, pop song structures, post-rock eclecticism, Japanese determinacy and Norwegian introvertion.”
