Toy Selectah aka Toy Hernández is a certified legend in the world of Latin music. He was one of the founders of the massively influential Hip-hop en Espanol group Control Machete out of Monterrey, Mexico. They went 9x platinum in South America. He then became a key A&R at the Universal label Machete Music and helped usher Reggaeton's global takeover in the mid 2000s. For the past couple of years he's been a touring dj, killing parties with his distinct vision of dance music, and doing big work as a producer and remixer.
Toy Hernández has been working with a long list of artist, bands and comtemporary music friends as: Calle 13, M.I.A., Morrisey, Manu Chao, Diplo, Sinden, Eminem, Thievery Corporation, Cypress Hill, Nortec Collective, Kinky, Plastilina Mosh, Paulina Rubio, Federico Aubele, Café Tacvba, Sergent García, Don Omar, Gustavo Cerati, Celso Piña, Notch, Juanes, Julieta Venegas, Alejandro Sanz, Molotov, Babasónicos, Dj Blass, Los Tetas, División Minúscula and many others.
Although he's become primarily known for Cumbia, Toy's sound references his whole history and a wide swath of global bass movement. This mixup makes for a number of genres that only exist in Toy's head and mix mexican soundscapes, Cumbias, Reggae and other caribbean styles with contemporary urban riddims creating his own trademark sound and collective called
Sonidero Nacional. Each track on his debut release,
Mex Machine, on Diplo’s Mad Decent label gives a new angle on Toy Selectah’s personal hybrid land.
Since 2007 Toy's been selected to be part of
Incubator Project, a cretive platform created and developed by British Council to encourage music collaborations between UK and Latin America creators.
He now lives in Monterrey Mexico and resides as Creative Director, A&R and CEO of Sones del Mexside, his own production company and boutique label, home of recently top ranked mexican rock band División Minúscula.
