Prof. Dr. Peter Wicke (DE) is Professor of the Theory and History of Popular Music and Director of the Popular Music Research Centre in the Musicology Faculty of the Humboldt University Berlin, and also Adjunct Research Professor in the Department of Music of Carleton University Ottawa. He is a member of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, and was its General Secretary from 1987 to 1991; from 1986 to 1992 he was the European Director of UNESCO’s International Communication and Youth Culture Consortium, from 1993 to 1997 a member of the steering committee of the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft e.V. (Cultural Policy Society) and since 1998 he has been a member of the German Music Council. He is on the editorial board of the journals Popular Music (Cambridge University Press) and Popular Music History (Equinox London) and on the advisory board of the International Institute for Popular Culture (University of Turku). A myriad of his articles on theoretical, historical and cultural policy issues in popular music have been published at home and abroad and subsequently translated into more than fifteen languages.
