// Online archive and conference
The pictoplasma project began in 1999 as an extensive inventory, collection and archive of contemporary character design. Through the countless images collected in its archives, publications and exhibitions, pictoplasma examines the vast array of possibilities characters offer as signs of an independent graphical language.
By playfully sampling and remixing visual codes, these characters evade established pictorial norms, confronting the viewer head on, emotionally and regardless of cultural background.
Pictoplasma's online-archives form the heart of an ever-growing community of artists, designers and fans, all centered around the visualisation of contemporary characters and figures. The pictoplasma books, published by the Berlin-based publishing house Die Gestalten Verlag, deliver a first ever documentation of modern character design. In 2004 Pictoplasma for the first time realized a conference on contemporary character design in Berlin – with CTM as an cooperation partner. At CTM.05 Pictoplasma presents a video screening with a selection of the best character design animation works related to music culture.
