TOPLAP take a unique and radical stance in the world of electronic music and audio-visual performance. TOPLAP is the “Temporary Organisation for the Promotion of Live Algorithm Programming”, set up to explore the application of live programming to composition and performance. TOPLAP advocates treating algorithms as live artistic material, allowing them to be written and manipulated to create music or video live in front of an audience. The interests of the TOPLAP membership encompass live coding performances with output in both audio and visual modalities, the possibilities of immediate feedback given by prototyping compositions in interpreted programming languages and new languages for on-the-fly programming. TOPLAP is an interdisciplinary collaboration project, comprising international artists, computer scientists and video and/or music performers.
Panel discussion:
Livecoding 101: An introduction
This informal panel discussion with some of the TOPLAP members investigates what livecoding means. Can programming be considered as performance? Can algorithms be improvised? Why would musicians and visual artists choose to write software in nightclubs? Is it possible to dance to sourcecode? Some members of TOPLAP will introduce the livecoding concept and discuss their individual motivation and approaches.
Moderation: Amy Alexander (US)
Audio-visual livecoding jam
A live mega-jam by a tag-team of ten TOPLAP members. The audience will see and hear the creation of musical and visual material that will, in addition, be projected onto large screens, rendering the processes entirely open and the craft apparent. The coded improvisations show a novel blend of intellectual and emotional content that challenges existing notions of both traditional haptic instrumental and DJ-like laptop performance.
