It seems to be the Canadians that are currently putting their definitive stamp on the “Rockno” genre – the marriage of Rock and Techno. The musical definition derived from Sid Le Rock who borrows from Post Rock and Minimal Techno, then stirs it up in a sweaty melting pot to produce stunningly groovy hybrids. Somewhat akin – but using Post-Punk and Noise Improv elements – Les Georges Leningrad are also mixing a highly explosive alloy. The Art-Terrorist-Trio from Montreal uses high-energy-sound and a skewed show to blast the rock band image into its component parts, while frontwoman Poney P magnetises the crowd with a voice reminiscent of Crass. Jake Fairley also elaborates his cracking beats with guttural nonchalance. Raging and shrill, he pushes Minimal Techno structures with discordant synths – or are they guitars? – into the popular zones. The only two not from Canada – yet all the more threatening for that – are ASCII.Disko, an updated version of the legendary DAF, and monstertruckdriver Marco Haas, the much revered T.raumschmiere, who will get collected heads a-shaking in endless rhythm. Their vibrating beats know only one direction: straight ahead.
