Seripop [CA/QC]
mural, 2006
Founded by Montréalers Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau in 2000, Seripop mainly is an incredibly prolific screenprint shop that slings out handdrawn prints, posters, and record covers in bulk. But the duo's work as likely manifests itself in painting, installation, performance art, video, spoken word, mail art or in the music of their band AIDS Wolf. Seripop's work shows influences from underground music and art, and draws from historically prominent designers, illustrators, and poster artists, including Saul Bass, Art Chantry, Vittorio Fiorucci and others. They abstract classic design styles, build on them, and form parallels to themes and objects in the outside world, such as underground comics, amateur graffiti, garbage, plants, mental illness, serial killers, Catholicism, and ceramic animals. Seripop design posters for many bands, such as The Boredoms, USAISAMONSTER, Chinese Stars, An Albatross, and The Unicorns.
