Humor in music often seems to be a dead end without much consequence. Not so in the realm of "Pranks". While humor is a one-off most of the time, pranks always contain a double agenda: what looks/sounds like a joke at first might be something completely different in the end. Pranks lead into the unexpected with the purpose to provoke. Starting from predecessors like the Dada and Surrealist movements, the talk focuses on Fluxus as the art movement that thrived by elevating the prank into an artform. Rene van der Voort is a writer, editor and curator, who has been active in art and music for over 20 years. His articles have appeared in a diverse range of publications. Proprietor of the Whistling Along label and Any Records, a record shop in The Hague specialized on rare music, he is a prolific promoter of experimental music. As a curator for museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam he focusses on musical works by visual artists and on fluxus related exhibitions.
