After award-winning coverage of conflicts and famine in Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, and Somalia, photojournalist Robbie Cooper began in 2004 to report from the interface of the physical and virtual worlds: major gamers in Asia mobbed in the street by fans, guild members who meet in huge numbers to defend their realm, Chinese and Taiwanese stand-ins who stay in the game for a dollar a day while their (usually western) employers work, sleep or eat … something several obsessive gamers neglected to do, with fatal consequences. Alter Ego places portraits of real-life gamers and their alter egos side by side: gender-bends, virtual marriage, superhuman powers and on-line crime are just some of the aspects that make Massively Multiplayer Online-games (MMOs) indispensable to millions of people.
