Dub techno resurfaced over the last year or so seemingly from nowhere. In new forms, wave after unexpected wave of great productions appeared that re-emphasise the signature cavernous spaces, reverb, and phase shifting while twisting the template in new directions. In tonight’s
Silver Reverb collaboration with
Resident Advisor, CTM are excited to present Berlin dub techno progenitor
Moritz von Oswald debuting a new live project, pitched against a showcase of the new school from
Modern Love, the label that issued a dozen prized 12-inches in 2007 and won the number three spot in RA’s recent top label poll.
The new amalgams of established forms and unexpected twists recently grew out of the dub techno that was already well established at the close of the 90s, and that has been swirling in the undercurrents ever since. Substance and Vainqueur – Basic Channel/Chain Reaction artists, established their new label Scion Versions and unleashed fresh tracks after years of quietly performing live. There’s been a surge of activity from Convextion, who re-released
Miranda as well as a long-awaited full-length album, and from Detroit’s late nineties answer to Berlin: Deepchord. Reformed as Echospace, they’ve recently released re-mastered classics and new productions on their eponymous label, as well as Fortune8 and Modern Love.
Our very special guest Moritz von Oswald is a pioneer presenting a new – and possibly one-off – take on the dub formula. After early collaborations with Thomas Fehlmann, von Oswald’s recordings with
Mark Ernestus as
Basic Channel,
Maurizio and
Rhythm & Sound – dub-inflected synth, slow modulation and deep beats – are revered classics that have deeply influenced a huge range of producers. Tonight, he’ll appear in a brand new configuration with Chain Reaction ground-breaker
Vladislav Delay and
Max Loderbauer (Sun Electric, NSI).
Modern Love artists, standard setters for new explorations into deep, bass heavy techno, will provide powerful counterpoints for the old-guard. Modern Love’s stable of artists, each contributing their own forward-thinking take on the electronic dub template, are helping establish Manchester as a possible third point in the Detroit/Berlin techno axis: See
Andy Stott’s rugged yet soulful peak-time techno,
Claro Intelecto’s hybrid of warehouse and deep dub and
Pendle Coven’s journey through the darker territories
A night of powerful, shimmering live performances that will take you deep into the morning.
