Sølyst combines acoustic drums, electronic percussion, tribal rhythms, and dark atmospheres to create something between krautrock dub and a kind of brave new world-music.
Behind Sølyst is Thomas Klein, otherwise known as the drummer and founding member of the group Kreidler. Hailing from Düsseldorf, a city with an illustrious musical reputation, Klein is clearly informed by the musical heritage of his hometown. Yet he is drawn to other shores. Sølyst is actually a Danish word meaning “a longing for the sea” and, in this case, it is a longing for the open sea. Sølyst explores locations to be found in between real places, inventing hybrid musical traditions for undiscovered islands.
While Klein’s work with Kreidler tends toward angular, propulsive rhythms, Sølyst is a platform for rounder, more expressive playing. Syncopated electronics and buzzing bass synths leave room for his drums to breathe and show their full dynamic potential. An eponymous debut LP was released on Bureau B in late 2011. Onstage Klein is joined by Torsten Mauss on synthesizer and percussion.
