Best known as one half of Pendle Coven (with Miles Whittaker), G.H. (Gaz Howell) has been a mainstay of Modern Love since the label was still in its beginnings.
 
The British producer, whose real name is Gary Howell, also took part in Modern Love’s HATE Soundsystem project – a sub label that features producers who wish to remain anonymous. As the story goes, HATE received a carload of dubplates and DAT tapes full of unreleased material some time in 2008. The several hundred or so original tracks have since been gradually catalogued, with a sparse few being released thus far.
 
Over the years G.H. has appeared on some of Modern Love’s deadliest output, but 2011’s "Ground" E.P is his first solo endeavour to land on vinyl. Composed of three tracks – side A’s "Ground”, and the flipside’s “Albedo” and “Earth”, the EP’s colossal, crashing aesthetic is infused with glints of cold metal, raw power, and gravity. 
 
Its journey begins on the Ground, a barren wasteland of distant bass detonations dislodging layers of crust and grinding rocks that activate geyser-like pressure valves. We follow into the shinier Albedo. A term that defines the fraction of solar energy reflected from the Earth back into space, we hear the difference in albedo as we move around the planet via a slow, laboured, kick-drum-propelled steam engine to encounter bright cymbal flashes and metallic chords illuminating moments of high reflectivity of ice glaciers and frozen lakes. Finally lifting off into Earth, we change to a faster pace and are propelled into a view of the entire planet in all its glory of fiery volcanoes, frozen continents, and seismic events creating fissures that give us a glimpse of the youthful planetary heartbeat that lies beneath the cracked and wizened exterior.
