Byung-Chul Han, born in Seoul, studied Philosophy in Freiburg i. Br. and German Literature and Catholic Theology in Munich. He gained his PhD in Freiburg, in 1994, with a thesis on the work of Martin Heidegger, and defended his professorial thesis (habilitation) at the University of Basel, in 2000. 
 
In summer 2010, Han was appointed Professor of Philosophy and Media Theory at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG). His research interests include eighteenth-to-twentieth-century philosophy, ethics, social philosophy, phenomenology, cultural philosophy, aesthetics, the philosophy of religion and of the media, and intercultural philosophy. In 2010, Matthes & Seitz published his book Müdigkeitsgesellschaft ("Tiredness Society"), in which he analyses the consequences of a shift from a negative society to one dominated by an excess of positive thinking.
