Born in Coburg, Germany in 1965. One-half of space jazz duo Flanger and head of Nonplace Records, Burnt Friedman has lent his ear to several projects under various aliases. Recording under the name Drone in the early '90s for Kim Cascone's now legendary silent imprint, Friedman formed Flanger in 1997 with Atom Heart, which was released on Ninja tune records. He went on to form the Nu Dub Players in 2000 and released several recordings with the group for the Scape imprint while maintaining a successful solo career on Nonplace were he toured across the globe.
Burnt Friedman and Jaki Liebezeit deftly and casually maneuver round the jagged rocks of "four-four time". With Joseph Suchy or Robert Nacken on Guitar and/or Hayden Chisholm, Clarinet they constitute a musical organism. The lack of an ordinary full 'drum kit' sound is an alluring aspect of their "Secret Rhythms" based live programme as shakers, skins, and static substitute for the absence of hi-hat and kick, imparting the music with a tribal feel. These rhythms sound free, vibrant and open, mainly because the players use empty space as a take off and landing platform for shifts in rhythm and time in these airy compositions.
