Marcelo Aguirre: drums, gongs, vocals
Derek Holzer: electronics, “tapes”
Seamlessly arbitrary, the conjunction of elements
ABOMINATIONS has put its filthy hands on and crushed together since its still very young inception appear to be like those elements’ intrinsic character: profane. Genre-defining terms like grindcore, death-metal, black-metal, noise, and its many sub-divisions, call for specific images of genre, its audience, age group, musical mannerisms, social and dress codes, visual/ lyrical imagery and, depending on which side you position yourself, respect, fanaticism or hatred. From another side of the bay, improvisation, sound art, drones, layered sounds, performance art, electronic music and processing, sound poetry, and vocal artistry conjure up a tradition of modern thinking concerned with the evolutionary but critical aspects of development (and sometimes, academic laden over-intellectualization) that the arts have called for.
Neither distinguishing each part as individual components nor creating a cut-up assemblage, ABOMINATIONS calls for the outrageous power intrinsic to the above mentioned elements, relaying their most urgent qualities, and subverting their evolutionary logic by spontaneous performance, abrupt change of dynamics or attentive exaggeration. Hyper-blasting with cascading blocks of pure aural savagery, they eradicate the insidious passivity of the performer to become a musical atrocity themselves, a loud and blistering guttural assault whose horrifying intensity has yet to be surpassed.
ABOMINATIONS, also the title of one of Marcelo Aguirre’s solo performances, was unleashed after the duo Aguirre-Holzer’s caustic performance for the NWEAMO festival in Berlin, at the Zentrale Randlage (R.I.P) during May of 2007. They did a small Swedish tour entitled Schädelmaschine in November 2007, playing the famed intermedia venue Fylkingen in Stockholm, and had the chance to record their brutal music at the EMS (Institute For Electroacoustic Music in Sweden).
