Shir Khan (Jan Simon Spielberger) recently remixed Bondo Do Role's Office Boy, but he's best known for a plethora of internet-only mixes: the Discobelle High-Energy Mini-Mix, Panic at the Disco and many others. Said to have masterminded Berlin’s ‘bastard-pop revolution,’ and then implemented it with his vast record collection, Shir Kahn’s DJing is all embracing – refusing all boundaries, he crisscross between dozens of genres from moment to moment. First making a name for himself in mash-up, then electroclash and now nu-rave, Shir Khan is currently riding the wave of white hot baile funk/ electro crossover.
 
He was recently included in the URB Next 100 List (2007), and featured in BPM's Winter Conference Issue (2007); he’s been asked to do mixes for Fabric and BBC Radio1, and in summer 2007 Shir Khan dropped his first officially released mix Maximize!. After 12"s from Surkin and Adam Sky, Maximize! was the first mixCD on Shir Khan’s label, Exploited. Shir Khan’s earlier series of 12” records Broken Bootlegs and notorious mix-CD Copyright Candies (Exploited/Kompakt, 2004) are classics of the bastard-pop genre. Much more than mixes, the recordings were collages of song snippets, edited, altered, stretched and stacked up four to songs deep to make a new, larger whole. Best-of mash-ups taking in the 80s, 90s and now.
 
Spielberger is also a member of Tolcha, Berlin’s Elektro-Dubstep-Crew combining electro, dub, downbeat and experimental elements. Their videoclip 'Crushed Ice' was featured on the Slices/Electronic Beats DVD, and their debut album Tolcha-Gestalt had guest appearances from Sasha Perera (Jahcoozi/Kitty Yo/Modeselektor), RQM (The Tape/Kitty Yo), and Neonman (Pale).
 
Studio R is another Spielberger side-project, one that’s seen a release on Sonarkollektiv. The first 12” Clapz (2006) featured Berlin/Canadian Star Mocky and the second, A+R, was a collaboration with Capitol A released on Compost/Black Label in early 2007. The track hit the German club charts Top 20 and got support from Laurent Garnier, Andrew Weatherall, Trickski, Alex Attias, Josh Wink and others.
 
Spielberger is well known in Berlin for his show ‘Dope On Plastic’ on the former pirate radio station, Twen FM.
