Rodrigo Derteano was born in 1979 in Geneva (Switzerland) and grew up in Lima (Peru), where he started studying audiovisual communications at the Peruvian Catholic University. He graduated from media arts at the Zurich University of the Arts (Switzerland). Currently he lives and works in Berlin.
Early experiences with experimental electronic music led him to the field of electronic arts. He's latest projects focus on the connection between space and sound. Field recordings of urban environments often serve him as a material and are brought out of context to create audio maps and sound sculptures. His installations challenge our every day hearing practices and their connection to media, but also recombine and manipulate sounds playfully to create new sonic experiences.
His works have been shown at electronic arts festivals and exhibitions in Switzerland, in Winterthur (“Dialog” 2004) and Basel (“Viper” 2004), and in Ljubljana (“Haip Festival for Open Technologies” 2006) and Maribor (“MRFU” 2007), both in Slovenia. Also in 2007 he took part in a group exhibition at Hartware Medienkunstverein in Dortmund, Germany (“Crosskick”), and at Laboral Centro de Arte in Gijon, Spain (“Emergentes”). During the first quarter of 2007 he was awarded a residency at the “Tesla” electronic arts centre in Berlin, where he also exhibited his projects.
Apart from his own work, he's part of the organizing committee of Zurich’s “copy” festival and a founding member of “dock 18” in the same city, a new venue for events, exhibitions and workshops on sound and electronic arts.
