Mudboy is Raphael Lyon, a self-taught circuit breaker based in Providence, Rhode Island. He runs the Free Matter for the Blind record label and began recording
experimental noise and
electronic organ music in 2000. Since then he’s released more than a dozen albums on a variety of labels: early releases saw the light on Providence's local free-folk/psych label Last Visible Dog, and his full-length album,
Hungry Ghosts! – These Songs are Doors, was released on both Not Not Fun and Digitalis. Lyon’s recent releases are on cassette tape.
Lyon made an audio 'zine' in the mid ‘90s on cassette called 'Free Matter for the Blind' containing interviews and field recordings/phonography. The zine was later revived as a creative commons label for the music of Lyons and his friends. The first real mudboy release proper was
Mudboy Volume II: Resnik Loves Me, Or, Further Adventures in Space, Time, Math, and Other Inconsistencies: Experimental Organ Music for Furniture in a CDr edition of 150. The first 'high fidelity' mudboy release came in 2005, 'This Is Folk Music', on Last Visible Dog Records.
Lyon plays on circuit bent old church organs, customizing and retrofitting keyboards, both for himself and custom-built to order. He plays rich music that hints at psychedelia and drones, mixing in field recordings, noise and occasional drums. Lyon is also an installation artist, building site-specific installations with sound, and environments for his performances.
