Trio of Stephen O’Malley of American drone duo
Sunn O))), Vincent de Roguin, the keyboardist and electronics mastermind of dark and trancey Swiss post-rockers
Shora, and Daniel O’Sullivan, multi-instrumentalist behind psychedelic art-rock group
Guapo. Recording together since 2003, Æthenor have released three full-length albums,
Deep in Ocean Sunk the Lamp of Light (2006),
Betimes Black Cloudmasses (2008), and the third
Faking Gold & Murder to be released early in 2009.
The project started when Sunn O)))'s guitarist Stephen O'Malley and Vincent de Roguin started making spur-of-the-moment improvisational recordings in hotel rooms and other locations while touring. After the tour was over, the pair convened in de Roguin's home base of Geneva with Guapo's Daniel O'Sullivan (also a touring member of Sunn O))) to shape the tour recordings into a finished project.
Deep in Ocean Sunk the Lamp of Light was the result, released in 2006 on VHF Records, an experimental label around since the early ’90s. Æthenor recorded two follow-up albums during an all-night session in Geneva.
Betimes Black Cloudmasses, released in early 2008, features guest appearances from
Ulver's
Kristoffer Rygg – who made his first live appearance in over a decade when Æthenor played the Roadburn Festival in April 2008 – and free improv drummers Alex Babel and Nicolas Field on its three long, untitled tracks; the third album
Faking Gold & Murder, yet to be released, features lyrics, vocals and instrumental contributions by
David Tibet of Current 93 and by
Alexander Tucker amongst others.
