Four Tet |
Four Tet is the stage name of Kieran Hebden. Hebden began his musical career in high school playing in the post-rock band, Fridge, with friends in Putney around 1995. In early 1997, Hebden started a solo project, 4T Recordings, with the aim of experimenting with 'DJ-Shadow style sample-scapes', and though only one 7” was released, ('Double Density', Output 1997), 4T Recordings became the foundation of Hebden’s acclaimed Four Tet project.
Hebden began releasing hip-hop influenced material as Four Tet in 1998 with the 36 minute, 25 second single 'Thirtysixtwentyfive' on Trevor Jackson's Output Recordings label. 'Thirtysixtwentyfive' and the follow-up 'Misnomer' were both NME single of the week. Hebden’s first full-length, Dialogue (Output, 1999) was released when he was just 21. It explored the outer reaches of both free jazz and soul music and was noticed by experimental dub pioneer Pole (Stefan Betke). The two eventually collaborated for a 12", Four Tet vs. Pole.
Four Tet has given digital-folk remix treatment to artists including Aphex Twin, Anti-Pop Consortium, Radiohead, Matthew Dear, Nathan Fake, Bloc Party and Black Sabbath.
For non-Four Tet explorations, Hebden uses his given name. He’s been engaged in an acclaimed live project with jazz drummer Steve Reid; the pair has recorded four albums: the two volume Exchange Session (Domino, 2006), Tongues (Domino, 2007) and NYC (Domino, 2008). Under his own name too, Hebden makes forays into dance music and club culture with DJ-ing, blending groove-based music with jazz, post-rock and other genres. He had a residency at London’s The End before the club closed its doors in 2008, and has done a DJ Kicks mix (K7, 2006), a Fader podcast (2008) and Resident Advisor podcast (2008). Four Tet's four-song EP Ringer (Domino, 2008) was a homage to the loopiness of Detroit techno and Hebden's long-time inspiration, Steve Reich. Hebden began exploring dubstep connections too, and in 2009 worked on a collaboration with Burial. The new Four Tet album There is Love in You is due out in late January 2010 on Domino.
