Deacon (born 1981) attended the Conservatory of Music at State University of New York at Purchase in Purchase, New York, where he played in various bands – including tuba for Langhorne Slim and guitar in the improvisational grindcore band, Rated R – and completed his graduate studies in electro-acoustic and computer music composition. After moving to Baltimore and into the famed Copy Cat Building in 2004 – an artist community warehouse living/studio space – Deacon set up the Wham City Art's Collective which hosted local and touring acts, live stage performances, the inaugural Whartscape Festival (2006).
Deacon has released a string of solo instrumental albums, both self-published and on Carpark Records, beginning in 2003. They have included collections of computer music, live recordings of ensemble pieces and sine wave compositions.
It was 2007’s
Spiderman of the Rings (Carpark Records), which had, in contrast to earlier productions, vocal elements that evoked crowds and a sense of community, that put Dan Deacon on the map. After touring with a 15-piece ensemble, Deacon returned with,
Bromst (Carpark Records) that met all the expectations of a follow-up to an underground hit.
He has built a reputation as brilliant live performer with his table full of gadgets planted right in the middle of the dancefloor, engaging his audiences with frenetic dancing and dadaist theatrics.
