Holyfuck |
Holy Fuck is a Toronto-based lo-fi instrumental project formed in 2004 by Brian Borcherdt and Graham Walsh. Initially a side project, Holy Fuck has expanded with an evolving line up currently including Matt Schulz and Matthew McQuaid. A self-titled debut appeared on Dependant Records in 2005; in 2007 the follow up, LP, came out on Young Turks. Both written while on tour. Holy Fuck has toured with Mouse On Mars, Cornelius, !!!, M.I.A. and Wolf Parade.
Holy Fuck began as a side project for singer / songwriter Brian Borcherdt and base guitarist Graham Walsh. Their early performances were given without so much as a rehearsal. There were no songs, and live sets were completely improvised. The group was originally part of independent music collective and label co-operative founded by Borcherdt in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1994 called Dependent Music, also home to Wintersleep, Jill Barber and Kary. Borcherdt has a long folk-rock history both as a solo artist and as a member of Burnt Black, Trephines, Hot Carl, By Divine Right, and Junior Blue.
Borcherdt and Graham Walsh (effects/synths) are joined by a rotating rhythm section that has included, in addition to Matt McQuaid (bassist) and Matt Schulz (drums), Brad Kilpatrick – drums, Kevin Lynn – bass, Mike Bigelow – bass, Loel Campbell – drums and Glenn Milchem – drums.
Holy Fuck approaches 'electronic' music sans laptop, preferring instead the chaotic feel of vintage electronics and miscellaneous machines – including old film editing gear. The band was named one of Glastonbury's top new acts in 2007 and performed at Coachella in 2005 as New York rapper Beans' backing group.
